Faces of FIFTY2

Jing Tai – CFD Engineer

// Introduce yourself

My name is Jing Tai and I’m 28 years old. I joined FIFTY2 in July 2020 to work on my Master’s thesis and from April 2021, I will permanently move into the role of a CFD Engineer.

// Describe what is your job at FIFTY2.

I wrote my Master’s thesis at FIFTY2, which is about implementing and testing a new physics feature of the PreonLab solver. That ties into my future role where I will occupy primarily a hybrid role between the Application Engineering team and PreonLab development team to develop the physics features for PreonLab. I will implement and test new physics modelling approaches and provide support to both the AE and PreonLab teams.

// What’s the coolest thing about working at FIFTY2?

The implementation of fluid physics into the digital realm has always fascinated me. In the end you are turning some chicken scratch on paper (the math!) into a simulation that you can see, something that’s capable of providing concrete insights to engineering problems. It’s something that’s incredibly beautiful in my eyes.

Somewhere in between the math on paper and the simulation on the screen lies the implementation, and I find this a challenging and satisfying aspect of the work which I hope to get better at as I continue my work.

// What is it that you like the most about working in your team?

Definitely the team dynamics in the workplace. I love the fact that there aren’t silos where teams are isolated from one another. The FIFTY2 team is excellent at what they do, too, and in the end what results is a group that is incredibly high-performance as a whole.

// And finally, tell us something about yourself others may be surprised to know about you.

I have not watched any of the Pirates of the Carribbean movies. The first time I watched Lord of The Rings was when I watched the entire trilogy in one sitting, sometime in late summer 2020.
