We are proud to announce the release of PreonLab 2.2. It introduces new post-processing and export capabilities that will allow you to get more information out of your simulations. Furthermore, we added a much-requested new type of fluid source and extended the Python interface for more versatile scripting. Finally, PreonLab 2.2 introduces many usability improvements as a direct result of your feedback.
Improved wetting sensor
Probably the most exciting change in PreonLab 2.2 is the improved wetting sensor. Previously, the wetting sensor only recorded binary information whether a region was wet or not – there was no possibility to distinguish whether a drop of water touched the sensor surface briefly or whether the surface was covered in fluid for minutes. The new wetting sensor allows you to colorize the surface given the amount of time it was in contact with fluid.
More sensor export options
You can now export the samples measured by a sensor plane or a force sensor as a .csv file for usage in other software. Furthermore, you can now generate a video from sensor plane data directly in PreonLab.
Flat jet source
The new flat jet source will help you to recreate some of your real scenarios even more accurately in PreonLab and is especially useful for washing cases. You can see the new flat jet source as well as the improved wetting sensor in action in this car wash demo:

The water material is a popular visualization feature in PreonLab, accurately modeling reflection, refraction and light absorption. In PreobLab 2.2, the water material gets even better and now includes an option to render turbulent fluid-air mixtures as spray, increasing realism in many applications. Even when realism is not the goal, spray rendering can be a useful tool for visualization by highlighting turbulent regions. The two images below showcase the importance of spray rendering. In the picture without spray, the fluid is barely visible while in the picture with spray, you clearly see where the fluid hits the geometry and in which directions it is reflected.
Copy and paste objects between PreonLab instances
PreonLab 2.2 finally gives meaning to Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. You can now copy and paste objects or multiple objects, even between multiple PreonLab instances. If you copy multiple objects, connections between these objects will be preserved so that you can easily copy entire scenes. We believe that this feature allows for improved workflows when creating new scenes. For instance, it is now very simple to use a part of an existing scene as a starting point for a new scene.
What’s next for PreonLab?
PreonLab 2.2 represents the next step in the evolution of PreonLab, but we are also hard at work on the next major version that will bring completely new features. One of our current priorities is distributed computing in a cluster with the goal of enabling more accurate simulations in less time. With PreonLab 2.2, we finally got rid of the last UI/OpenGL related dependencies in the Preon core, which already helps to deploy PreonLab on single nodes in a cluster today. We plan to ship distributed computation in Q1/ 2018.
